New 'safety hub' to boost police presence in East Village yyc
The East Village Safety Hub will open Aug. 10 in the basement of the St. Louis Hotel, at 430 8th Ave. S.E. The space will serve as an outpost for city police officers while patrolling the core, with a goal of increasing the presence of uniformed officers in the neighbourhood.
“People are seeing things as they wander through our streets and our parks. People are seeing vitality, the return of businesses, the return of people,” Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong said at a news conference on Thursday.Article content That uptick in crime is largely driven by common assaults. Calls to police about disorder also tracked above the five-year average both citywide and in the core at the start of 2022, with above-average call volumes for unwanted guests, disturbances and mental-health concerns.
“We’ve seen in the last year the opportunities the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub has brought to bringing the different agencies together to collaborate on safety issues — examples being transit safety, safety in the core, protests and demonstrations,” Tawfik said.
