ITV bosses are introducing a new rule to protect contestants

The new year is upon us and with it comes the return of a whole host of our favourite shows, and one hugely anticipated reality TV programme which viewers look forward to every year is Love Island.

ITV announced that for the first time ever contestants will be asked to disable their social media accounts during their time in the villa to protect both them and their families, ahead of the new series.Usually contestants will assign a family member or friend to run their account on their behalf in their absence, but due to repeated issues with online bullying the broadcaster has been forced to step in, taking measures into their own hands.

The most recent series prompted thousands of complaints to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom in reference to “alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour”, due to this contestants will also receive “guidance and training” around “mutually respectful behaviour in relationships.” Off the back of the last series contestants will also be offered resource links to read before meeting the other contestants to help them “identify negative behaviours in relationships” and “understand the behaviour patterns associated with controlling and coercive behaviour”.
