The former GIants linebacker will now get his NFL coaching chance.
Giants fans are familiar with the new Las Vegas Raiders coach: he spent the last five seasons of his career in New York, helping win a Super Bowl following the 2007 season.. A “10-ton brick was lifted off his back,” former teammate Danny Clark said in August 2009 when a grand jury ruled “no bill” and that it would not indict Pierce on charges of carrying Burress’ unlicensed firearm after the shooting.
“I am not sorry for how I acted that night. I am not sorry for how I responded,” Pierce said of the Nov. 29 shooting at the Latin Quarter nightclub,. “I am sorry for putting myself in position that I had to respond the way I had to respond. There a lot of lessons I learned from this. I take them to heart and I take them seriously, obviously. It has been a lot of ups and downs.”
According to police and reports at the time, Pierce faced these charges because he took the gun to his home in New Jersey and later arranged for it to be taken back to Burress’ home. He drove Burress to the hospital in his Cadillac Escalade, which was impounded, and stashed the gun in his glove compartment, according to police. He could have been charged with a felony that carried a maximum of 3 1/2 years in prison.
Burress was indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. Burress ultimately served about 21 months of a two-year plea deal that included two years of supervised release.The AP contributed to this report.
