The tech will also use a machine learning algorithm to filter out any interference from other sources, such as satellites or solar activity.

SBQuantum’s solution is based on a diamond quantum magnetometer, a device that can measure the magnetic field's strength and direction with high precision and stability. The magnetometer uses quantum effects to create a red glow from a diamond crystal, which corresponds to the magnetic field vector measurements. The diamond quantum magnetometer works using a particular type of diamond with nitrogen-vacancy centers.

But that’s not all. SBQuantum also uses tensor gradiometry, a technique that measures the changes in the magnetic field in different directions. This helps to identify the characteristics of other objects that affect the magnetic field, such as minerals, metals, or submarines. To filter out any noise from the environment, such as cars or power lines, SBQuantum also applies its proprietary algorithms.

“We are very excited to participate in the final phase of this prestigious competition. We have been working hard to develop our diamond-powered quantum magnetometer and compensation algorithms,” said David Roy-Guay, CEO and Co-Founder of SBQuantum. “This is a great opportunity to demonstrate our space technology and show its potential for various applications.”

An ambitious new technology might be needed to see other EarthsAn ambitious new technology might be needed to see other EarthsThe race is on to discover truly habitable Earth-like worlds. While we are starting to observe the atmospheres of large potentially habitable planets such as Hycean worlds with the telescopes we currently have, the most significant breakthroughs will likely come with the development of advanced specialized telescopes. These new designs will likely use a starshade to hide the glare of a star and allow us to directly observe its exoplanets. But will that be enough to study distant terrestrial planets?
