A research collaboration between the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, Laurentian University and McMaster University will encourage habitat restoration for species at risk

A new turtle research project for the Junction Creek watershed has been launched, and you're invited to an information session to find out how you can help.

A collaboration with the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, Laurentian University and McMaster University, the project seeks to complement previous turtle research projects completed in 2019 and 2013-2014. They also have a strong significance in culture and traditional teachings. In some Indigenous stories the shell of the turtle is the foundation upon which the land was formed, “Turtle Island,” also known as North America.

The project hopes to identify new locations of critical habitat through species occurrence and habitat use, conduct active turtle surveys and radio-telemetry of Blanding’s Turtles in targeted under-sampled sites where the species have been sighted and the location has been identified for habitat management or restoration opportunities, as well as promote existing community science programs and turtle conservation in under-sampled sites through targeted workshops, guided hikes, and dissemination...
