In the pipeline for quite some time, despite opposition from some quarters, the first national tour of the new Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra was announced at a function held at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, Johannesburg, this week.
The tour kicks off at the Linder on December 15. Two days later, the orchestra will perform at The Playhouse in Durban and, on December 21, they will perform in Cape Town’s City Hall.
However, Tembe – himself a lauded opera singer and chief executive and artistic director of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra for 25 years – is upbeat about the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra and its role in society. “Music and the arts have a unique power to elevate society and I appreciate the fact that this orchestra is not only intent on achieving the highest artistic goals, but is also taking its responsibility to the community seriously.”Tembe said the orchestra would be working with other provincial orchestras and partners to achieve its objectives and would “be utilised as an effective tool to brand South Africa positively on the international stage”.
