Big Rays unveiled the latest artwork added to downtown Fairbanks, created by Vladimir Zhikhartsev, a local watercolor artist.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Friday, July 14, a new mural was added to downtown Fairbanks, after Vladimir Zhikhartsev completed his commissioned project.
“Big Rays has been here for almost 70 years and we really wanted to create something that would bring both tourists and locals downtown,” said Jessica Rostad, one of the owners of Big Rays. She said they chose Zhikhartsev because he is a well known and talented artist in Fairbanks. When they commissioned him, they asked him to create something that would represent the entirety of the Fairbanks experience.
Zhikhartsev explained that some elements of the mural are very realistic while others are very abstract because he wanted details to stand out, but he didn’t want the mural to look like a photograph. To pull this off he had to chart the bricks on the side of the building and carefully compose his painting brick by brick. The whole process taking about 16 weeks.
