Jenny Molineux gave birth to her daughter last year, after two rounds of IVF - but her experience as a new mum has been difficult. Warning, this article contains references to suicidal thoughts.

A new mum is spreading awareness of mental health struggles after giving birth to her daughter last year.

"That's when the real anxieties started really, that's when my mental health really took a battering," she said. "Theadora's movements pretty much stopped, so we were up and down in the hospital, two or three times a day having monitoring movements. She had to undergo an emergency C-section, which increased her levels of anxiety and her mental health plummeted, with intrusive thoughts making themselves apparent. Jenny added: "Being a new mum and having a new baby, I didn't really understand. I just thought that every new mum had these intrusive thoughts and I thought it was normal. So I sort of muddled along really for the first couple of months, I seemed to be doing alright.

"My intrusive thoughts always revolved around Theadora getting hurt, so if I was out with the pram and there was a bus or a truck coming past, I would always see her under the truck," Jenny continued. "Obviously, being registered blind, my vision's very poor, it's very blurry. These intrusive were in technicolour. It was like I could see them, I could see everything, which was the bit I was finding most disturbing.

Straight away, Jenny called the crisis team for help, where she was then admitted to the Ribblemere, LSCft Mother and Baby Unit at Chorley Hospital for extra support. She says this was "absolutely the right decision" and "probably the best thing that ever happened to me". Jenny says her understanding of acute Mother and Baby wards were different from what she imagined them to be and what they are in reality.
