John Schneider spent almost three seasons at Nat Bailey Stadium managing the Vancouver Canadians
Precious few speak more passionately about the C’s and the Nat Bailey Stadium experience than Schneider, 42, who spent two and half seasons guiding the home side at the venerable Vancouver ballpark. And his platform got a boost this week when the Blue Jays elevated him from bench coach and gave him the reins after firing manager Charlie Montoyo.
“We had a lot of fun when he was here. We learned a lot together and we all worked with a lot of great players during that time,” C’s president Andy Dunn said of Schneider. “Everyone here is completely thrilled that he’s getting this shot. Schneider, who’s from Princeton, N.J., was a catcher in the Blue Jays’ farm system for six seasons, making it as a high as triple-A prior to his retirement after the 2007 campaign. The Blue Jays had him managing their rookie league team by 2009. One afternoon contest in particular Schneider had been quarrelling with the base umpire. Fai started the interview that day with Schneider and they went back and forth on a couple of issues before Schneider said, “Hang on a second Rob … I have to take care of something.”
“It’s an important spot for our players and their development. That’s where they first learn that, with the Blue Jays, you’re not just playing for a city but for an entire country. You see the people at The Nat and how much it means to them.”
