The Community Safety Act was initially passed in 2013, but never brought into force. Similar legislation has been effective in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Yukon,…

The provincial government hopes new legislation will give communities more power to combat “nuisance” properties linked to gang and drug crime.

“It does take a lot of work to tackle the gun and gang violence we have seen in some of our communities,” said the minister, noting a series of recent shootings in Surrey. “We’ve moved quickly to modernize the act to address the current realities of organized crime in B.C., and to ensure that it’s fair, efficient and minimizes administrative burden,” he said.

He said higher-level criminals don’t like it when their supply chains and organizations are disrupted “whether it’s for trafficking, whether it is for selling illegal liquor or firearms.” “The experiences of other jurisdictions with community safety laws show that working with the property owners can bring about lasting solutions benefiting public safety,” he said.
