New Juneteenth mural debuts in Houston at African American History Research Center

Houston-based public artist, Reginald C. Adams, poses for a photograph alongside his muralist team and community members after he unveiled the city’s newest mural at the African American Library at the Gregory School commemorating Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 in Houston.A mural dedicated to Juneteenth, designed by artist Reginald C. Adams, was revealed Wednesday at the African American Research Center in Houston.

The mural in Houston, depicting American history surrounding Juneteenth and the civil rights movement, was the first in an ongoing project that will ultimately involve six cities, all aimed at celebrating and understanding the meaning and importance of Juneteenth. Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Miami and Philadelphia also are to receive murals as a part of the Absolute Equality Public Art Initiative.

“To me, Juneteenth symbolizes liberation, emancipation, and freedom,” said Adams, the Houston artist. “Without emancipation and the freedom to create and express myself openly, I would not be able to bring these types of socially conscious public art initiatives to the forefront of public discourse.”

Houston Public Library and the City of Houston hosted the event. Adams completed the mural with a team of local artists and volunteers. The public and local officials were invited to see the completion of the mural.
