With reports of new coronavirus cases flattening and the number of hospitalizations falling, New Jersey is now shipping ventilators it received from the federal stockpile to hospitals in other states
Another 100 ventilators that were sent from California earlier this month have been cleaned and returned.“As someone who was born in Boston and still has a lot of family there, I am proud to say that we are giving 50 ventilators, five-zero, to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” Murphy said. “We could not be more honored and proud to do that.”
As of Tuesday night, data reported by the state Department of Health suggests a declining number of patients requiring hospitalization for confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19. At the same time, while hospitals in the state’s southern counties are still dealing with an uptick of new cases, totals in more densely populated northern and central counties are beginning to flatten.
Some of the declines in the state’s hospital census may be due to patients waiting longer before seeking care, Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said. She encouraged those experiencing what they suspect are Covid-19 symptoms, as well as those exhibiting signs of heart attack, stroke or other conditions, to go to the emergency room before their condition worsens.
Positive developments in New Jersey’s ongoing fight against the virus have amplified calls for Murphy to take bigger steps to reboot the state’s economy, much of which has been shut down for weeks. Hundreds of protesters congregated outside the governor’s office in Trenton on Tuesday as he announced the 21 members of his Governor’s Restart and Recovery Commission.
