New Jersey will make sweeping changes to how long-term care facilities in the state are regulated, as the number of reported Covid-19 deaths at the sites — 4,151— now accounts for half the statewide deaths linked to the virus
Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration promised Tuesday to make sweeping changes to how long-term care facilities in New Jersey are regulated, as the number of reported Covid-19 deaths at the sites — 4,151— now accounts for half the statewide deaths linked to the virus.
“I certainly understand that for many of these facilities, this was the equivalent of a 500-year flood, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't examine how folks responded when those floodwaters started rising,” Grewal said at Tuesday’s briefing. “It also doesn't mean we shouldn’t examine how they operated before that flood — if they cut corners, if they or anyone for that matter ignored red flags or warnings, if they lied to regulators or others, if they put profits over patients.
However, if facts uncovered by the probe “justify criminal charges, we’ll bring criminal charges,” he said.
