Family of Leonel Villasenor, who died from a drug overdose last year, claims that jailers knew about and profited from illegal drug sales
and others have called on the Sheriff’s Department to do more to keep illegal drugs from entering county jails.
The legal complaint also accuses the sheriff of failing to properly train deputies. The department says it provides proper medical and mental-health care to people in custody and is always working to improve training. Court records from prior cases against Villasenor show that he had a history of mental illness dating back to at least 2014. He was twice found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial, and his criminal history consisted largely of petty theft accusations, records show.
