‘In the course of attacking the enemy, Lyra McKee was tragically killed while standing beside enemy forces,’ the organization said in a statement

The so-called new IRA said it accidentally shot a journalist in Northern Ireland during rioting last week, and apologized for her death.

The group, which formed in 2012, also accused police of “provoking” the rioting preceding the gun attack that killed Ms McKee. The riot followed a pattern familiar to those who lived through the worst years of violence in Northern Ireland. Police arrived in the city’s Creggan neighbourhood to search for weapons and dissidents. They were barraged with gasoline bombs and other flying objects before someone wearing a black mask appeared, fired some shots and fled.

The statement followed calls from Saoradh, who are associated with the New IRA, for the organisation to apologize.
