Mayor John Tory is asking council to direct city staff to report on how his plan can be achieved.
Toronto Mayor John Tory unveiled an ambitious plan on Friday to build new housing in the city over the next decade that includes sweeping changes to zoning bylaws to allow multi-unit dwellings in neighbourhoods currently restricted to single-family homes.
In unveiling his new housing proposal, Tory said the city needed to “take a more aggressive approach” to addressing the housing crisis. The mayor’s proposal, dubbed the 2023 “housing action plan,” will be debated at city council next week. In aTory recommended that council direct the city manager to flesh out the details and report back to the executive committee no later than March 2023 on how the plan can be achieved.
Besides overhauling city zoning bylaws to be more density friendly, his proposal also calls for reviewing the city’s official plan, urban design guidelines, heritage standards and urban forestry policies, to make sure they align with housing goals.
