'If you mention it to someone and they don’t know about it, they light right up,' Fogo Island Mayor Andrew Shea says of Dr. Maureen Gibbons' impending arrival to be the new doctor in town. By AndrewLWaterman

Gibbons has worked in medicine since 1979. She worked in Ireland, England and Germany before landing in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1985. The burden of care — how seriously ill people are — and the incursion of government and health authorities into the workload of general practitioners via services like 811 , the downloading of specialty care onto GPs due to specialists having such little time, as well as a seemingly overzealous MCP auditing system, to name only a few issues, left family physicians with patients with chronic and complicated illness, alongside stacks and stacks of paperwork and no idea how much they would be paid.
“Along the course of doing that, one of my colleagues said, ‘Why don’t you try Fogo?’ And it just hadn’t occurred to me,” Gibbons said. “I contacted Central Health, they responded the same day, I had an interview the next day and they were the most accommodating, inviting, pleasant, and every word that is superlative that I can use.
