Serving Coast Salish and other First nations, CJNY 106.3 FM hit the airways on March 6

“We’re Indigenous-owned and -run, our board of directors are all leaders in First Nations communities of B.C., and our mandate is to serve our people and help them promote, communicate, bring people to their events and serve them with some Indigenous programming and news.”

That successful playbook, which has the benefit of drawing in non-Indigenous listeners and introducing them to Indigenous culture along the way, will be followed in the Lower Mainland. “It’s very important to us … that what we convey is authentic and accurate, a proper reflection of the communities we serve. That’s been our recipe for success in central-northern B.C. now for more than 35 years and we know we can bring that to CJNY.”

There is one challenge faced by Indigenous broadcasting in B.C. that Indigenous broadcasters in other provinces don’t have to overcome: language.
