The latest strain has a distinct set of symptoms and has seen a huge surge in cases
A new strain of Covid-19 is causing numbers of the virus to rise with Northern Ireland currently experiencing the fastest spread of the disease.
Eris, a variant of the widespread Omicron strain, first hit our shores in early May, with the World Health Organisation adding it to its watch list under the identification of EG.5.1 soon after. The Public Health Agency still publishes weekly bulletins but this does not provide a complete picture as widespread testing is no longer taking place.
And there has been a general increasing trend seen in the number of community acquired emergency inpatients since the beginning of July. In the week ending July 28, there were three Covid registered deaths; no change when compared to the previous week.
