While it is unknown whether the new Covid-19 variant is associated with either easier transmission or more severe disease, the large number of mutations warrants caution, said Department of Health director-general, Dr Sandile Buthelezi.

The genomes from the two South African cases were uploaded to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data by the National Institute For Communicable Diseases on 22 August.

“Both are from routine surveillance from private laboratories, one from Gauteng and the other from Mpumalanga. With the detection of the two genomes from South African cases, we will be increasing genomics surveillance and conducting detailed phylogenetic analysis,” said Buthelezi

Nigeria's New Ministers - Old Wine, New Calabash?Nigeria's New Ministers - Old Wine, New Calabash?President Bola Tinubu has sworn in 45 of the 48 ministers who were cleared by the Senate. The Senate declined to confirm three ministers, citing the need for "security clearance". The size of the cabinet has drawn criticism from some Nigerians who are concerned about the high cost of governance. Others have criticized the allocation of portfolios to the yet-to-be-inaugurated ministers, arguing that some of the ministers' portfolios do not align with their pedigrees or records of previous service. Tinubu won a narrow victory in a three-way electoral fight only five months ago, and his victory is still being challenged by the opposition in court. Critics say that Tinubu's pick of ministers is an effort to build his government on the political coalition that helped him into office.

New Covid-19 Variant Eris Found in South AfricaNew Covid-19 Variant Eris Found in South AfricaSouth Africa's National Department of Health has confirmed the first case of the new Covid-19 "Eris" variant from a sample taken in the Gauteng province. While the department is reminding citizens that they can still access life-saving vaccines at public healthcare facilities, Researcher and Virologist, Professor Tulio de Oliveira has said that there is no cause for concern. He said that since the end of 2021, there had been various lineages of Omicron circulating in South Africa, without an increase in hospitalisations. WHO has now designated Eris, also known as EG.5, as a variant of interest (VOI), a subvariant of the Omicron lineage that originally emerged in November 2021. The organisation said there has been a steady increase in this variant's prevalence, with over 7,000 sequences shared from 51 countries as of August 7, 2023. Due to its growth advantage and immune escape characteristics, WHO said EG.5 may cause a rise in case incidence and become dominant in some countries or even globally.
