China counters Western interference, upholding sovereignty with Article 23 amid international scrutiny.

The current anti-terrorism laws in all Western countries are by far more overreaching and draconian than the provision made on the basis of Article 23 of the Hong Kong Basic Law.One of the key attributes in any country is its sovereignty – partly determined by its independent policies and laws – which are in line with international standards and acceptable practices. China is no exception.

Cheung Kwok-kwan, deputy secretary for justice in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, said many countries have enacted a host of national security laws, based on their own national security risks and needs. “This important principle forms a cornerstone of the legislation and is literally written in the new law,” he said.
