A dozen of the dam-building creatures are set to be released at Cairngorms National Park where they've not lived in over four centuries.
New beaver colonies planned in the Highlands could flood whole areas of farmland, local landowners have claimed.
A recent consultation by the CNPA found three quarters of respondents backed the return of beavers to the Cairngorms - however, only a third of respondents actually lived there. He said while much of the area’s farmland is hilly and unlikely to be badly affected, the best land on the valley bottoms could be impacted, adding: “If land becomes that bit wetter, making the hay needed for stock for the winter could become impossible.”
Sarah Henshall, the park’s head of conservation, said “mitigation measures” would be in place to help anyone negatively affected by beavers. Henshall pointed to a hierarchy of measures, beginning with dam removal, adding: “As a last resort there is also lethal control as well.”
