SNP MP David Linden also urged the UK Government to remove the benefit cap and two-child limit
David Linden MP has urged the UK Government to reinstate the weekly uplift that was given to Universal Credit claimants during the coronavirus pandemic. The SNP work and pensions spokesperson also called for it to be increased to £25 per week and extended to all claimants on legacy benefits.
Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee, Sir Stephen Timms MP, also shared how the lump sum nature of the cost of living payments is “problematic”, according to evidence given to the committee of cross-party MPs by Citizens Advice. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has also said that uprating benefits would have been preferable to sending out a string of lump sum cost of living payments to households. The economics research institute argued that the "sticking-plaster solution" has been expensive and ineffective.
Researchers looked at an instalment of the payments in July 2022. They pointed to indications that a payment of £326 in July 2022 boosted spending, indicating that people may have been experiencing hardship while they waited for the payment to arrive. "The Government spent £8.3billion on lump sum payments in 2022-23 and will spend an estimated £10.5billion in 2023-24 - a better-targeted policy could have offered higher amounts of support to those in greatest need, with no additional cost to the taxpayer."
