Netanyahu says no ceasefire until hostages freed, open to 'tactical pauses' for aid in Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks during a press conference in the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv on 28 October 2023 amid ongoing battles between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.The UN Secretary-General called for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza due to the high number of child deaths.
"I suppose we'll check the circumstances in order to enable goods, humanitarian goods to come in, or our hostages, individual hostages to leave. But I don't think there's going to be a general ceasefire." The United States, Israel's closest ally, has pressed Netanyahu to agree to"humanitarian pauses" to allow aid into the enclave, but backed the Israeli leader's opposition to a full ceasefire.
