Nephtali De León is known for poems, stories and essays that have been published in several countries and languages.

, was published during the 1960s while he was still in high school. Since then, his many works have been published in the U.S., Mexico, Spain and France, and translated into multiple languages. He currently works full-time on his writing and art, in addition to giving lectures and reading poetry at schools and community events.

San Antonio was the first major city in Texas to recognize and appoint the position of Poet Laureate, starting in 2012. For a three year term, the Poet Laureate promotes and preserves the art of poetry as well as celebrates San Antonio's culture and history. The previous San Antonio Poets Laureate are Carmen Tafolla , Laurie Ann Guerrero , Jenny Browne , Octavio Quintanilla and Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson . De León joins them as the city's sixth Poet Laureate.
