Nelson to replace B.C.’s oldest working fire hall made famous by Roxanne
Nelson city manager Kevin Cormack told council at a meeting Jan. 31 that the hall, which is known outside the city for being a central location in the 1987 movie Roxanne, is nearing the end of its life.He said the city has hired a consultant to look at possible locations for a new fire hall.
Nelson fire chief Jeff Hebert told the Nelson Star that a 2009 consultant report recommended that the city needed a new fire hall, and since then the need has only become greater.,” Hebert said. “I’m not sure what the dollar value is to replace it, but we’ve got our money’s worth out of it.” Hebert said all emergency service buildings should be built to “post-disaster standards,” meaning that in the event of an earthquake or flood, the building is still standing.
Hebert is also Nelsons’ director of emergency management, and that two-person office is also in the fire hall, along with space for a seasonal FireSmart co-ordinator. This has meant converting storage space into office space. The fire hall does not have room, outdoors or indoors, for such requirements as hose testing or pump testing.
“They have to park one or two blocks away and then run to the fire station, get in their gear and get in the truck. A fire can double every two minutes.”was formed when an arsonist set fire to buildings in downtown Nelson in 1891.
