At only 18 years old, Laura was given a year to live when she was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in 2018. After years of working hard to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer, Laura passed away at the age of 23 in May last year.
While fighting the condition, which was discovered during a routine eye test, Laura completed her degree at the University of Manchester, met Michelle Obama, piloted a Royal Navy patrol boat, presented a television weather bulletin and even brought Peter Kay out of retirement. Having left her mark on the world whilst alive, Laura continues to leave her mark after her passing a bit closer to home.
This then prompted enquiries to Pendle Borough Council and, following the relevant approval, it was officially changed. In Laura's hometown, Nicola says her daughter spent a lot of time in the area when she was a youngster and it also became a place of solace during her treatment. Nicola told LancsLive: "Laura was very proud to come from Barrowford, she always loved the park and spent lots of time there as a child. We still walked loops of the park when she was having treatment for brain cancer, as being out in the fresh air always seemed to help.
"To see her name permanently recognised on a road sign there is so special to us. Hopefully it will help to keep her memory alive and perhaps people will look her name up and learn about some of the amazing things she achieved in her short life.Councillor Tom Whipp, Pendle Borough Council’s Planning and Regulatory Portfolio Holder said: "I’m delighted we have been able to make this happen and honour this very courageous young lady.
