With protective equipment in short supply, and the pandemic yet to peak, the union says health workers are reduced to wearing bin bags
Health workers have threatened to go on a national strike in September, when the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to peak in parts of the country, over a lack of protective gear.
The union’s leadership was so concerned by the high rate of coronavirus infections among healthcare workers it visited all the Covid-19 hot-spot facilities around the country in June. PPE gear is a crucial component in the fight against coronavirus as it shields healthcare workers and the general public from contracting the virus. The wearing of masks/face coverings in public is now law.
He said that on August 21 union members will apply for a day’s leave across the country, and hold lunch hour pickets across all sectors from August 24-27, against the shortage of staff and PPE, and non-compliance with occupation health and safety regulations, among other issues.
