Nedbank has issued an alert to customers, warning of a new type of fraud doing the rounds – adding to the long list that the bank believes South Africans should be aware of.

Nedbank said that scammers are posing as well-known companies, including airlines and streaming services, offering fake discounts if you download an app.To stay safe, Nedank said that customers should only install apps from official stores, such as Apple App Store or Google Play Store.Unusual requests should also be double-checked, with customers researching the offers presented.

South Africa is seeing a rise in deepfake scams, but Nedbank has also cautioned customers to watch out for “old-school” tactics from criminals. “If the people targeted from your contact list accept the deepfake as real, they’ll have no reason to doubt that you’re sharing something that worked for you.”Fraudsters can promise loans that entice people in financial distress with promises such as “no credit checks” or “qualify even if you’re blacklisted.”“When you pay that fee, you may also compromise your online banking details.

Nedbank said that personal information or financial details should never be shared with someone who does not identify themselves.
