The order isn\u0027t sitting well with many of Waterton\u0027s local businesses, which are still open despite the park closures.

The Townsite Lakeshore Trail and the Townsite and Kootenai Brown Trail are also closed.

No date is given for a possible lifting of the closures and Parks Canada says the maximum penalty for violating the order is a $25,000 fine. Business owner Steve West said he understands officials shutting down back-country areas but added visitors shouldn’t be discouraged from coming to all of the park, which will hurt restaurants like his.

“We’re sitting with our hands open, ready for business,” said West, who operates Trapper’s Mountain Grill and Smokehouse. “There’s no need discouraging people — the boat rides are still going . . . not everybody is a back-country hiker.”Advertisement 5“What should be doing is not charging people to come into the park,” said Mike Christou who runs the Waterton Park Cafe.In September 2017, the Kenow wildfire burned 35,000 hectares in the area, including 19,303 hectares in Waterton Park, which led to evacuations. The fire impacted 80 per cent of the park’s trails.
