Local breweries competed in the microbrew competition, traditionally held on the first night of Cleveland Oktoberfest, which took place Friday. Here are the winners.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Fat Head’s Brewery – no stranger to victories in blind-judged beer competitions – took top honors in the 2023 Cleveland Oktoberfest microbrew competition on Friday, the first night of the annual Labor Day tradition.
Judges named Fat Head’s Goggle Fogger, a German-style Hefeweizen, best in show. The Middleburg Heights brewery is a perennial winner in regional, national and international competitions. Fat Head’s had four beers that earned medals Friday.Cole – who has collaborated on beers in Germany - said he and his team “put a lot of work into creating a very traditional process” for that beer, which is endemic to Southern Bavaria, he said.
“It really has been on a roll a little bit, and we love it because it’s very authentic. The guys come over and drink our Goggle Fogger, and they say, ‘It tastes like home.’ " Great Lakes Brewing Co. – the first craft brewery in Ohio, which has been around since 1988 – also had a strong showing at the competition, also garnering medals with four beers in multiple categories.
Oktoberfest continues through Monday, Sept. 4, and then Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9. In addition to the beer, there’s an art tent, plenty of German food, warm pretzels, cigars, wiener races, a glockenspiel, tribute bands, sand sculptures and many other activities.• “Bucket List: 1.
