The numbers from Alberta Health Services, obtained through a freedom of information request and disclosed in a news conference in Airdrie on Friday, show in 2019-20, there were 5,653 EMS calls serviced by paramedics in Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore and Cochrane. In 2021-22, that number grew to 15,896.
The document also shows call data for the first 15 weeks of this fiscal year, and the number was at 2,232, on pace for 7,737 calls for 2022-23, about half of the volume from last year. In most cases, however, the call volume has not drastically impacted call response times for life-threatening events in the surrounding communities.
In Airdrie, the median time has gone from about seven minutes to eight minutes and 47 seconds, while the 90th percentile time rose from about 12½ to 17½ minutes.
