CVS Health will allocate $10 million to fight youth use of e-cigarettes as part of its latest effort to curtail smoking and the use of tobacco products
So far, $40 million has been allocated by CVS out ofcommitment to smoking prevention and anti-tobacco products since the company’s landmark decision in the fall of 2014 to stop selling tobacco products in its stores. That move has left in its wake criticism over the years of rival retailers like Walgreens Boots Alliance that still sell tobacco products to adults.
The additional money, which comes from CVS and its charitable foundations, in 2019 will be used to “support youth smoking and e-cigarette prevention strategies and education delivered in classrooms, by clinicians and in communities across the United States.” There are an estimated 3.6 million kids in middle schools and high schools using e-cigarettes, CVS said, citing the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey.
“The spread of e-cigarette use among youth jeopardizes the progress made in reducing smoking over the last two decades,” CVS Health chief medical officer Dr. Troyen Brennan said. “By collaborating with experts and aggressively investing in innovative strategies, we believe that we can help reverse this disturbing trend.”
