NCS basketball playoffs: Salesian defense locks down SRV, advances to Open Division semifinal
SAN PABLO – Salesian had San Ramon Valley figured out from the opening tipoff of Thursday night’s 55-39 first round playoff victory at Contra Costa College.
Salesian ended the first half with a 22-9 lead that was earned by its lockdown perimeter defense. San Ramon Valley, a team that has scored at least 70 points in 12 games this season and known for long-range shooting, did not make a three-pointer until there was only 1:53 left in the game. San Ramon Valley’s only good stretch of play in the rematch of last year’s NCS Division II championship, a 49-47 Salesian win, occurred in the third quarter. SRV went on an 11-0 run in the first four minutes of the second half cut the Salesian lead to 24-20. Sophomore Luke Isaak scored six of his team-high 13 during this quarter.
Defenders like Deundrae Perteete and Evin Goodwin took turns guarding guards and bigs depending on the possession. When they needed a rest, teammates stepped into their roles with no dropoff in quality. Perteete only notched three points, but had one of the best blocks of the year when he grabbed a SRV layup out of the air with five minutes left in the game.
