News and notes as San Diego State prepares to take on Furman in Saturday's NCAA Tournament game
When San Diego State drew Charleston in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament, coach Brian Dutcher’s first call was to Niko Medved, whose Colorado State Rams had played the Cougars in a November tournament.
Richey was Medved’s assistant at Furman for six years before being promoted when Medved went to Drake. A year later, Medved jumped to Colorado State and since 2018-19 has been playing against the Aztecs two — or, in the case of this season, three — times per season in the Mountain West Conference.“Their offenses, their sets, are very similar,” SDSU guard Matt Bradley said of Furman. “We’ve been comparing them to Colorado State this whole time we’ve been watching them.
“I’ll tell you this, I learned how hard it was,” Richey said. “I learned that offense is hard. It’s hard to score. It made me start to shape my offensive philosophy at 27, 28. … I became obsessed with film and just years and years of putting this philosophy together.”He would pick a program or two each summer that “I was mesmerized by” and watch full seasons of game film to dissect the finest details of their offenses. Lennie Acuff at Lipscomb is one. Rick Byrd at Belmont is another.
It’s a complex scheme that takes concepts from Pete Carril’s famed Princeton offense and speeds it up significantly. The Paladins average 81.7 points and make 9.5 3s per game, but backdoor you to death if you extend too aggressively on the perimeter shooters. They rank 32nationally in offensive efficiency by the Kenpom metric and fourth in 2-point shooting percentage despite being near the bottom of Division I in average height.
