In an announcement made Tuesday, the NBA said there will be no games played on Election Day – Tuesday, Nov. 8. The league also plans to have all 30 teams play the night before (Nov. 7), calling it a 'civic engagement night' as a last-minute prompt to vote.

The NBA rarely alters the schedule for an event like Election Day. In the past, multiple teams have played on Election Day. But this leaguewide initiative builds on what was done two year ago, when about two thirds of the franchise’s facilities or arenas were transformed into voting locations. In 2020, as part of the social justice initiative following the tragic deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the NBA and its players were openly involved in election-related pushes. LeBron James was one of the most vocal, creating a voter registration drive while also using his massive platform to speak openly about the importance of voting.
This November, all 435 U.S. House seats will be up for grabs, along with more than 30 U.S. Senate seats and gubernatorial races. “It’s unusual. We don’t usually change the schedule for an external event,” James Cadogan, the executive director of the NBA’s social justice coalition, told NBC, which first reported the league’s Election Day schedule plan. “But voting and Election Day are obviously unique and incredibly important to our democracy.
