Navdeep Bains ‘very disappointed’ after Fiat Chrysler announces 1,500 job cuts at Windsor assembly plant GlobePolitics
Federal Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains offered his support on Friday to workers facing layoffs by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. in Windsor, Ont.
The company announced on Thursday it would cut the third shift at its Windsor plant at the end of September – a loss of about 1,500 jobs. Mr. Bains said in a statement he is “very disappointed” by the news and is committed to fighting for their jobs.Unifor Local 444 president Dave Cassidy said on Thursday the union would need support from all levels of government going forward.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement that the provincial government will “fight tooth and nail” to protect auto worker jobs in Windsor. FCA said it was cutting the shift at the minivan plant to better align production with global demand.
