For a growing number of nature-seeking homeowners, the great outdoors isn't just a backdrop anymore. 'It's a core amenity.'

Developers are responding to demand with ‘naturehoods’ and ‘agrihoods’ that promote outdoor living and sustainabilityRachel Dees has always loved outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing and fly fishing. What she didn’t like, however, was the three-hour drive to the mountains from her home outside Seattle.

The couple purchased a 1.5-acre lot for $350,000, spent $1.2 million to build a 3,700-square-foot custom home cut into the side of a hill and moved into their new home in July 2021. One side of the house is all glass, providing striking views of the mountains surrounding the home. A room by the garage is dedicated to storing their gear, including ropes, camping and rock-climbing equipment, fishing poles and more.
