Although typically rare to the midwest and northern states, the black-bellied whistling-duck has now been documented nesting in Wayne County in Ohio.
On Sept. 8, Henry Miller glanced at his small pond on his Wayne County farm and spotted a fowl unfamiliar to him. His birding neighbor Harry Swartentruber recognized the black-bellied whistling-duck, and friend Joe Rabor quickly got word out. This wasn’t any run-of-the-mill record — the bird was tending 10 young chicks! Ohio’s first nesting record finally materialized.Miller went to great lengths to accommodate visitors to his sheep farm by opening fences to birders, and I made the trip on Sept.
Black-bellied whistling-ducks mate for life, and both care for their young from egg until several months of age. Only one adult has been seen at the Miller pond, so some ill fate probably befell its mate. The surviving bird — males and females are nearly identical so the sex is unknown — seems to be coping well and the youngsters are mostly thriving., and apparently at least one calls the pond home. As of this writing , the ducklings are down to eight. I’m guessing the snapper got them.
