The construction of a barbed-wired fence along Finland's long border with Russia has broken ground near the southeastern town of Imatra.
A view of Russian border crossing point in Svetogorsk, as seen from Pelkola, Finland, April 14, 2023.The construction of barbed-wired fence along Finland's long border with Russia — primarily meant to curb illegal migration — has broken ground near the southeastern town of Imatra less than two weeks after the Nordic country joined NATO as the 31st member of the military alliance.
The move was seen as a show of muscle by Moscow. The issue was settled when Finnish President Sauli Niinistö held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The flow of migrants stopped shortly thereafter. "Border barrier fence was no kind of political topic before the war . And actually, it wasn't a kind of plan of the Finnish border guard," Brig. Gen. Jari Tolppanen, head of the technical division at the Finnish Border Guard, told The Associated Press. "All changed after the attack ."
Imatra is located a mere seven kilometers off the Russian industrial town of Svetogorsk in the Karelia region and is a few hours' drive away from Russia's second city of St. Petersburg. The town has a long history in dealing with Russians — tourists, day-trippers and permanent residents alike.

China defense minister to meet Russian counterpart in MoscowChina's defense minister will visit Moscow for meetings with his Russian counterpart and other military officials. The Defense Ministry said Friday that Gen. Li Shangfu would also visit Russia's military academy during his April 16-19 visit. Li's trip underscores China's strengthening engagement with Russia, with which it has largely aligned its foreign policy to challenge the U.S.-liberal world order. China has refused to criticize Russia's invasion of Ukraine and blamed the U.S. and NATO for provoking Moscow. During a visit to Beijing last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping issued a joint statement declaring a “no limits” relationship between the two countries. Li is under U.S. sanctions over arms purchases from Russia.
