Joburg Water receives funding commitment from National Treasury to tackle the city's water woes.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in collaboration with the National Treasury, has committed to supporting Joburg Water 's initiatives to address the city's persistent water challenges. Joburg Water submitted a turnaround strategy and a business investment plan to the National Treasury to determine the funding and resources required to accelerate maintenance work, a significant obstacle to water supply.
The commitment from the National Treasury aims to alleviate a backlog exceeding 20 billion to replace aging pipes and sewage lines, upgrade equipment, and revitalize the water treatment works plant. Furthermore, Joburg Water emphasized the establishment of a multi-stakeholder platform to collectively work towards improving access to safe water within the municipality. Nondumiso Mabuza, a representative of Joburg Water, stated: 'In conjunction with the Department of Water and Sanitation, we, along with other municipalities, have formed the platform for a water-secure Gauteng. This platform encompasses civil society, business and industry, as well as interest groups, led by the World Bank. Its primary objective is to foster collective action and a unified approach to enhance water security in the municipality.
