The Canadian men’s national soccer team wanted to prove they belong on same the field as the best in the world and did that.
“For sure we belong at this level, and we demonstrated it,” Canada midfielder Stephen Eustaquio said. “This was a very positive game for sure.
“I’m proud of elements of that performance there is no doubt,” Canada head coach John Herdman said. “But in my head, there is a deep frustration that we should have gotten something out of that game; we created a lot of opportunities.” Canada has a couple of big-ticket players as well in Davies and David, who drew a lot of attention from the Uruguay defenders throughout the contest.
“I thought his effort was outstanding, I thought he put a big shift in; his numbers will be through the roof,” Herdman said. “I thought he was fully committed to bringing his identity to the game and on the other side of the game, the dirty work, I thought he was very intuitive around his defensive game and it was definitely one of the best defending performances we’ve seen from Alphonso from Canada in a long time.
