The 27-year-old from Cole Harbour signed an eight-year contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday that features a $12.6 million annual average salary. The total value of the deal is $100.8 million, with $85.34 million coming in the form of a signing bonus. It is the richest contract in NHL history and is intended to keep the Cole Harbour native in Colorado until the end of the 2030-31 season.24-25: $15.725M SB, $775k salary27-28 through 30-31: $8.91M SB, $990k salary each year"Nathan is obviously one of the premier players in the NHL so a long-term extension was something we wanted to get done before the season started," Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a news release.
The Avalanche drafted MacKinnon first overall in 2013 after he led the Halifax Mooseheads to President Cup and Memorial Cup titles. They were the first and only league and CHL championships for the franchise. His new contract goes into effect for the 2023-24 season. "It's my tenth year this year so it's cool to get it over with," MacKinnon said in an interview with AltitudeTV."I've been thinking about it a lot and I didn't want to go into the season without a contract. I knew I'd be asked about it all season so I'm really happy."
