We chat with Renan Ozturk about the struggles the crew of NatGeo’s ExplorerLostintheArctic faced while shooting the new National Geographic special:
Summary National Geographic’s Explorer: Lost in the Arctic retraces the famed journey of lost adventurer Sir John Franklin. In 1845, Franklin and a team of 129 men left England to navigate the Northwest Passage, a trade route at the top of North America that uses the Arctic Ocean as a bridge between the Atlantic and Pacific. Franklin’s ships became trapped in ice, and while their remains—and those of many of his crew—have been found, Franklin himself is still missing.
I think, going into it, we just knew that this one was going to be harder than ever. It's harder than any of the other ones that I've done with Mark, because it was his boat. There's no outfitter taking care of us. We had to be radically self-reliant on all these things, and it was such a small team. There's not a lot of room for error. And the ocean is an element that's different from the mountains and has its own specific dangers.
Other than that it's just balancing the lightest-weight camera gear with some of the heavier-weight stuff and knowing when to use them. We had cinema lenses that they use on full Hollywood feature films for certain parts, and then other times you had to know when to use GoPros or underwater housings. It was always tricky, because any time you did that, it was seen as something that was decreasing the safety margin because you're going away from your crew responsibilities.
Renan Ozturk: We ran out of food on King William Island, and it was really desperate for a long time. People were falling apart, fighting over single cashew nuts and stuff. To keep the morale up, a lot of times for me it's just finding little moments of beautiful light. Sometimes the camera acts as a barrier for me. You look through the viewfinder and you can kind of bury yourself in the reality of what's happening through the camera.
