In Stittsville, where I live, young immigrants are adding economic and social value to a country whose demographics are rapidly changing.
Advertisement 4Canada’s immigration system selects 60 per cent of its newcomers from the economic class. In contrast, the U.S. admits only 11 per cent under this category. Family unification amounts to 70 per cent of American immigration programs, compared to only 27 per cent in Canada.
The newcomers I met in Stittsville are the recent face of the suburbs of Canada. Immigrants like them are the lifeblood of this country’s economic growth, labour needs and future prosperity. Immigrants, historical trends and academic studies show, have for a long time provided Canada a needed infusion of dynamism; innovation; cultural energy and vitality; trade connections with the world; and much-desired, knowledge-based human capital.
Immigrants, because of the Canadian Express Entry system, come here nowadays at a young age — at the peak of their productive years and innovative capacity. They help in establishing new enterprises, buying new businesses, and spending in local economies. Attracting the best and the brightest is a strategyOn Jan.
• More than one-quarter of the Canadian population in 2036 might have a mother tongue other than English or French. Diversity, in summary, is Stittsville’s destiny as much as it is Canada’s destiny. Integration, was, is and will remain the ultimate challenge in the years and decades ahead. Every federal government, regardless of political affiliation, should make positive integration policies a priority.
