Future hall of famer plans to expand leadership and mentorship role in his final year as full-time Cup Series driver.
A 22-year veteran of NASCAR’s premier series, Kevin Harvick is answering what he calls a need for a leader in the garage.
For more than a decade, young drivers in NASCAR’s top series often floundered as they sought to gain footing in the pressure-packed environment, but Kevin Harvick said Tuesday that changed last year with the safety issues surrounding the Next Gen car when support and mentoring were rekindled. “The day I took over Dale’s car in Rockingham, Dale Jarrett and Dale Jr. were the two drivers that stepped up in the trailer and said, ‘Hey, we know it’s tough, but we’re here to support you and, you know, go out and drive that car hard.’”as well as Jarrett as the two drivers he could always contact for advice “when I was in trouble.” Later, Harvick and Tony Stewart would often compare notes.
