Nascar moves to Watkins Glen this weekend, as Chase Elliott looks to extend his dominance at the course. But intrigue lies ahead — with just two races to go until the playoffs, several drivers are still vying for a ticket to the dance…
1. We don’t really talk about Christopher Bell a lot here, but he’s finished in the top 15 in three of his last four races and is fourth in points. He has 12 top-10s but has won just one race. What are his chances for a Cup title?At this time last year, Bell had a similar number of top-10s and was seventh in points. We wouldn’t have said he had much of a chance at the Cup title then, but he ended up scoring two victories in playoff elimination races and made the Championship 4.
2. There are two races left until the playoffs. With drivers competing for the top 16, what will this urgency translate into? More aggressive driving? Will drivers comfortably in the top 16 be trying to strategize to get teammates in?You won’t see much of a difference at Watkins Glen, only because there’s only so much you can do at a road course. You’re either good or not there, and teammates won’t be much help. But at Daytona for the regular season finale? You could see all sorts of strategies.
5. It’s been a few weeks since we last checked in on the Truck Series and Zane Smith has fallen off from his commanding favorite spot. It’s now Ty Majeski. Who do you likeI picked Majeski to win the title before the playoffs began, based on his increased speed lately. But it could also be a bit misleading, because Majeski thrives on short tracks and those are the two races he’s dominated recently . If he makes the Championship 4, Phoenix could play right into his hands.
