In October, NASA astronaut Col. Nicole Mann became the first Native American woman in space. USA TODAY's Women of the Year honoree spoke with us about overcoming adversity and the coolest thing about being on the International Space Station.

Col. Nicole Aunapu Mann is one of USA TODAY’s Women of the Year, a recognition of women who have made a significant impact in their communities and across the country. Meet this year’s honorees atIf there’s one thing NASA astronaut Col. Nicole Mann would tell her younger self, it would be, “Hang in there, kid. You're doing OK.”

To that girl, she’d say it’s OK to take on things you might fail at, because that’s how you learn to overcome adversity. That’s when the hard work pays off. She ended up being recruited to the U.S. Naval Academy, where she was known for a work ethic that was “off the charts,” as her coach there put it. Then it was off to Stanford, where she got a master's degree in mechanical engineering with a specialty in fluid mechanics.

Mann is registered with the Wailacki of the Round Valley Indian Tribes in California. On her mission to the station, she carried a dream catcher her mother gave her, as a reminder of her family and community.Col.
