Artemis I, the first human-class mission to be aimed at the moon since 1972, has received its license to fly, NASA officials said this week.

Divers test out the new training terrain at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory during a press tour of the Johnson Space Center for Artemis 1 on Friday, Aug. 5, 2022 in Houston. Artificial lunar sand and rocks were added to the bottom of the pool, right, next to an area that simulates the International Space Station.NASA’s next big launch is going to be a learning experience.

NASA has cautioned that timing may change. The launch could be scrubbed if weather conditions aren’t good . The next launch windows are Sept. 2 and Sept. 5. NASA officials said they were taking a “lean-forward strategy” for the mission. If some things go wrong in a way that might abort a crewed mission, Artemis I could still push ahead.

But Daniel Hasting, the head of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the milestones of the Artemis missions might not be indicative of where spaceflight is going. If the mission is a success, NASA has tentatively scheduled the Artemis II launch for 2024. That launch will carry a crew of astronauts around the moon and back. Artemis III, which plans to be the first flight back to the lunar surface and the first to send a woman and a person to color there, is planned for 2025.
