Boruto isn't to blame.
A common complaint about Boruto is that the sequel series unnecessarily retconned Naruto's Kaguya and the Otsutsuki clan into aliens and, in so doing, introduced an incongruent element to the franchise much too late. However, Naruto: Shippuden actually hinted that the Otsutsuki could be extraterrestrials by how the anime presented Kaguya's backstory, which effectively foreshadowed the "twist" that was to come in Boruto.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In the original manga by Masashi Kishimoto, Kaguya's story only went as far back as when she was sealed, thus creating the moon. However, episode #460 of the Naruto: Shippuden anime adaptation went a step further by sharing Earth's first record of her. Kaguya appears on Earth as a glowing ball flying through the sky that materializes into human form upon making contact with the ground.
Naruto Shippuden's God Tree Hinted That Kaguya Was an Alien Even with prior knowledge of these scenes, it is understandable that some might conclude that Naruto originally portrayed Kaguya and the Otsutsuki as gods, not aliens. The shinobi's use of the word "celestial" when referring to Kaguya elicits the image of a deity more so than aliens. However, a critical clue to Kaguya's roots lies in how the God Tree first appears.
Boruto Actually Justifies Kaguya's Alien Origins Of course, it's easy to see how some might not be happy with Naruto: Shippuden hinting that Kaguya came from another planet. Without the Otsutsuki's expanded role in Boruto, the overall concept can still feel off-putting when just considering the fantasy trappings of Naruto and Shippuden.
